The racket is a sandwich, and the filling matters more than the bread
Strip the paint off any padel racket and you find the same construction: two skins of woven composite, a core of expanded foam between them, a frame of the same composite wrapped around the edge, and a handle. That is it. The differences between an 18 dollar racket and a 45 dollar racket are not exotic. They are choices about which composite, which foam, whose mould and how long the press stays closed.

The factory quotes you a single number. Inside that number are four line items that move independently, and a supplier who wants your order will happily let you assume the expensive version while quoting the cheap one.
Decision one: the skin
The face and frame are either fibreglass, carbon, or a mix of the two. Fibreglass is cheaper, softer and more forgiving, which is exactly what a beginner wants. Carbon is stiffer, transmits more of the ball back to the hand, and is what an advanced player will pay for.
Carbon is sold by weave: 3K, 12K, 18K. The number is the count of filaments in each tow of the fabric, not a quality grade. A 3K weave is finer and generally stiffer for the same weight; 12K and 18K are coarser, cheaper to lay and produce that large chessboard pattern buyers have learned to associate with a premium racket. This is where most of the marketing dishonesty in the category lives: a racket sold as a full 12K carbon frame often has a single decorative carbon layer over a fibreglass structure.
What to ask for: the number of layers, the weave of each layer, and the fabric supplier's certificate. Then cut a racket from the production batch and look at the cross-section. A factory that is telling the truth will not blink at the request.
Decision two: the core
The core is EVA foam, occasionally a softer polyethylene marketed as FOAM. EVA comes in densities, usually described as soft, medium and hard. Density sets both the feel and the durability of the racket, and it is the single easiest place for a factory to save money without you noticing.
A soft EVA gives more ball output and is comfortable for a recreational player. A hard EVA gives control and lasts longer. The failure mode is a factory that supplies the sample in the density you agreed and the bulk run in whatever sheet was cheapest that month. You will not detect it by eye. You detect it with a shore A durometer, which costs less than one rejected pallet.
Decision three: the mould
The mould is the shape. Every racket factory in Guangdong and Fujian has a rack of them, and most of the rackets on the European market come from moulds that a dozen brands share. Starting from an existing mould costs you nothing, ships in weeks and is how any sane new brand launches. You change the layup, the core and the paint, and the racket is yours in every way that matters commercially.
A new mould is a real tooling cost and adds four to six weeks before the first sample exists. It only pays for itself above a few thousand units, and it comes with a contract question that most first-time buyers forget to ask: who owns it. If you paid for the tooling, write into the Chinese contract that the mould is yours, with the drawings attached, and that it can be moved. Without that clause it stays in the factory, and nothing stops it producing your shape for somebody else.
Decision four: the finish
Paint is not just paint. A single-colour base coat is cheap. Multi-layer paint, metallic effects and 3D relief add cents per unit, and cents per unit at ten thousand units is a real number. Rough surface finishes, the sandy texture that adds spin, add another step and another cost.
The finish is also where the racket looks premium in a photograph, which is why brands over-invest in it and under-invest in the core they cannot see. That is a choice, but it should be a deliberate one.
Why the sample is always perfect
The sample is hand-laid by the best operator in the plant, pressed with all the time in the world and inspected personally by the sales manager who wants your order. Mass production is a different animal. The resin ratio drifts, the press cycle gets shortened to hit a delivery date, and the EVA sheet comes from whichever supplier was cheapest that week.
This is not a moral failure of Chinese manufacturing. It is what happens on any production line without an inspection schedule. The fix is boring and it works: a check on the line at roughly 30 percent of output, a pre-shipment AQL inspection with photographs, and a balance payment that moves only after the report is clean.

- Four variables set the price: skin, core, mould and finish. Everything else is packaging.
- Carbon weave numbers (3K, 12K, 18K) describe the fabric, not the quality. Ask for the layer count and the certificate.
- EVA density is the cheapest substitution in the industry and is invisible until the racket cracks. Measure it with a durometer.
- An existing mould is the sane way to launch. If you pay for a new one, write the ownership into the Chinese contract.
- The sample is always good. The third production run is the one that needs an inspector.
