EVA soft, medium or hard: the core decides the racket

Two rackets with identical carbon faces can play like different sports. The difference is the foam you cannot see, and the factory knows you cannot see it.

What EVA density actually changes

EVA is a closed-cell foam, and its density is the number that matters. A soft EVA compresses more on impact, returns more energy to the ball and feels comfortable. A hard EVA compresses less, gives the player more control and, importantly, survives more hours of play before it starts to break down internally.

The trade is real and it depends on who is buying your racket. A club-level player who plays twice a week wants comfort. A competitive player wants control and will tolerate the harsher feel. A racket sold to beginners with a hard core will feel dead and will be returned.

Where the money leaks

EVA sheet is bought by the factory from foam suppliers, and the price difference between densities is meaningful at volume. The sample racket is built with the density you specified. The bulk run is where the substitution happens, usually not as fraud but as a purchasing decision made three levels below the person you negotiated with.

The symptom appears months later, in your market, as rackets that crack at the bridge or lose their response after a season. By then the container is sold, the factory has been paid and your brand is the one carrying the returns.

How to specify it so it cannot drift

Write the density into the contract as a number, not as a word. Shore A hardness is the standard measurement, and a durometer costs less than a rejected pallet. Specify the target value and the tolerance, name the foam supplier if you have one you trust, and add a clause that a substitution of material without written approval is a defect, not a variation.

Then measure it. Our inspectors take shore A readings on rackets pulled from the line during production and again at pre-shipment. It takes minutes and it is the single most useful number in a padel inspection report.

The honest conversation about FOAM

Some rackets are sold with a polyethylene foam core, marketed simply as FOAM. It is softer than any EVA, gives more output, feels excellent for a beginner and degrades faster. It is not a cheap trick, it is a legitimate product for a specific buyer. What is a cheap trick is quoting EVA and delivering FOAM, and it happens.
