OEM or ODM: starting a padel brand with 300 rackets

The most common way a new padel brand wastes its first fifteen thousand dollars is by paying for a mould it did not need.

The two ways to buy a racket

ODM means the factory already owns the design and the mould, and you buy it with your brand on it. You choose from their rack of shapes, you pick the layup and the core, you supply the artwork. Minimum order can be as low as 300 units and the first container can be on the water in six to eight weeks.

Paint and finish: the cheapest way to make an existing mould yours

OEM, as the term is used in this industry, means the racket is built to your design, usually with a mould cut for you. It is your shape, your tooling, your intellectual property, and it costs money and time before a single racket exists.

Almost every successful small padel brand started with the first and moved to the second when the volume justified it. The brands that reversed that order mostly do not exist any more.

What 300 units really buys you

Three hundred rackets on an existing mould, with your own paint, your grip and your packaging, is a real product. It is not a compromise product. The mould you are using is very likely the same one behind a racket that sells for eighty euros in Madrid with a different sticker on it.

What you are giving up is shape exclusivity. What you are keeping is your cash, your time, and the ability to find out whether your market wants a soft racket or a hard one before you commit forty thousand dollars to a mould that answers the question the wrong way.

When a new mould is worth it

Three conditions, and you need all three. You are selling more than a few thousand rackets a year of one model. You have a genuine design reason for a new shape, not a marketing one. And your brand is established enough that shape recognition is worth paying for.

If you are there, cut the mould, and put the ownership clause in the Chinese contract with the tooling drawings attached. If you are not there, spend the money on inventory and on quality control, both of which return more.

The first order, step by step

  1. Pick two or three shapes from the factory rack. Order samples in the layups you are considering, in the actual densities.
  2. Play with them. Give them to players in your market. This is the only market research that works in this category.
  3. Lock the spec in writing: layers, weave, areal weight, core density in shore A, weight range, balance range.
  4. Approve a golden sample. Have it sealed and photographed.
  5. Deposit, production, mid-production check, pre-shipment AQL, balance payment after the report.
  6. Consolidate the rackets with your grips, bags and apparel into one container instead of three shipments.

What to remember
  • Start on an existing mould. It is a real product, not a compromise, and it protects your cash.
  • A new mould needs volume, a design reason and an established brand. Two out of three is not enough.
  • Lock the spec as numbers: layers, weave, areal weight, shore A, weight and balance ranges.
  • Consolidate rackets, grips, bags and apparel into one container. It is usually the biggest saving in the whole project.
