Three jobs, in order of how much they cost you
Cubic efficiency. The carton decides how many units fit in a container. This is the biggest number and the one nobody looks at.

Protection. The carton decides whether the product arrives intact. Damage is a direct loss, and in fragile categories it is the difference between a good year and a bad one.
Retail readiness. Whether the box can go straight onto a shelf, and whether it survives the last mile of e-commerce. This is the only one anyone designs for.
The measurements that decide the freight
Carton external dimensions, units per carton, gross weight, and the pallet configuration. From those four numbers you can compute how many cartons fit a 20-foot and a 40-foot container, and therefore your freight cost per unit.
Ask for them on the quotation, before you negotiate. A factory that quotes a unit price without them is quoting half the cost.
The tests that decide the damage rate
Drop test. The carton is dropped on corners, edges and faces from a defined height. This is what a container floor and a forklift do.
Stack test. Weight applied on top for a period. This is what four days of ocean swell do to a stack six cartons high.
Vibration. On sensitive products, the shipping simulation catches what the other two miss.
None of this is expensive. All of it is skipped, and then the same importer pays for a claim and blames the weather.
The e-commerce constraint
If your product is going to be sold online and shipped individually, the export carton is not enough. The unit needs its own protection, because the last mile is more violent than the ocean. Design for the courier, not for the container, and test with the actual courier.

- The carton decides your freight cost. Get dimensions and units per carton on the quotation.
- Drop test, stack test, vibration. Cheap, skipped, and the reason for most damage claims.
- In e-commerce the last mile is more violent than the ocean. Design and test for the courier.
- Optimise the box before you negotiate the unit price. That is where the money is.
